Understanding the Turkish School Certificate System: Takdir and Teşekkür

For students in the Turkish education system, the end of the semester is an exciting time. Beyond just getting their report cards, students strive to receive a Certificate of Merit (Takdir) or a Certificate of Appreciation (Teşekkür). For international students or expatriate parents living in Turkey, understanding the strict criteria set by the Ministry of National Education (MEB) can be slightly confusing.

1. The Grade Point Average (GPA) Requirement

The primary factor in determining whether a student receives a certificate is their end-of-term weighted Grade Point Average (GPA). In Turkey, grades are evaluated on a 0-100 scale.

The Certificate of Appreciation (Teşekkür Belgesi)

Threshold: If a student's term GPA is between 70.00 and 84.99, they are entitled to receive a Certificate of Appreciation.

The Certificate of Merit (Takdir Belgesi)

Threshold: If a student's term GPA is 85.00 or higher, they are awarded the prestigious Certificate of Merit.

Important Note: These averages are "weighted." This means a subject you take for 6 hours a week (like Mathematics or Literature) will have a much higher impact on your overall average than a subject you take for only 2 hours a week.

2. The "No Failing Grades" Rule

Achieving a high GPA is not enough on its own. The Turkish system requires students to be successful across the board.

If a student has a failing grade (zayıf) in any subject on their report card, they are strictly disqualified from receiving any certificate, even if their overall average is 95.00.

Primary/Middle Schools: The passing grade is 45.00. A grade of 44.99 or below is a fail.
High Schools: The passing grade is stricter; it is 50.00. A grade of 49.99 or below in high school will cost you your certificate.

3. The Attendance Condition (For High Schools)

Academic success must be paired with regular attendance. According to recent regulations for High Schools (Ortaöğretim), unexcused absences play a critical role.

The 5-Day Rule: A high school student whose unexcused absences exceed 5 days cannot receive a Takdir or Teşekkür certificate. This rule is absolute, regardless of how high the student's grades are.
Note that this specific 5-day rule does not apply to primary or middle school students.

4. Disciplinary Record

Finally, school is also about behavior. If a student receives a formal disciplinary punishment (such as a reprimand/kınama) during the school year, they are disqualified from receiving any end-of-term academic certificates.
