Instead, the string will pull tightly upward, curving North-East over the Atlantic Ocean, brushing past the United Kingdom and Northern Europe, before curving back down toward the Middle East.

In Europe, the Qibla generally falls in the South-East quadrant, but the exact degree varies wildly depending on whether you are in the UK, Germany, or Russia.

  • London, UK: The Qibla is approximately 119° (East-Southeast).
  • Berlin, Germany: The Qibla is approximately 136° (South-East).
  • Moscow, Russia: The Qibla is approximately 185° (Almost pure South, tipping slightly West).

If a Muslim traveling from London to Moscow assumes the Qibla is a static "Southeast," their prayer direction will be off by over 60 degrees. This highlights why assuming a general cardinal direction is risky.
