You go in for your first ultrasound excited to see the heartbeat, but the doctor frowns slightly at the screen and says, "The baby is only measuring 6 weeks."

The Flaw in the LMP Calendar

The standard calculation for gestational age assumes you ovulated exactly 14 days after the first day of your last period. If you did, sperm and egg met on Day 14, and the biological clock of the pregnancy began ticking.

However, ovulation is highly susceptible to external and internal factors. Stress, illness, travel, weight changes, breastfeeding, Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS), or just natural bodily rhythms can delay ovulation significantly.

If you didn't ovulate until Day 28 of your cycle, you didn't actually conceive until two full weeks after the standard math assumes you did. Therefore, your baby hasn't "stopped growing" or "measured behind"—the baby simply hasn't existed for as long as the calendar claims.

Trusting the Ultrasound (The Gold Standard)

When there is a discrepancy between the LMP calculation and what the ultrasound shows, doctors will almost always trust the ultrasound, provided it is performed in the first trimester (before 14 weeks).

During this early stage, fetuses grow at an incredibly uniform rate. By measuring the Crown-Rump Length (CRL), the ultrasound can determine the biological age of the embryo with a margin of error of just a few days.
