The Myth of the "High-Value" Question

Let’s address the most common misconception first: Individual questions within a test do not have different point values.

In the TYT Mathematics section, the hardest, most time-consuming geometry puzzle is worth the exact same amount of points as the easiest basic addition question. The ÖSYM does not assign difficulty weights to individual questions.

Therefore, your primary strategy during the exam should never be to waste 10 minutes wrestling with a single "hard" question in the hopes of a massive reward. Skip it, find the easy questions, and secure your points. The statistical magic happens at the test level, not the question level.

How Standard Deviation and Test Averages Work

Instead of looking at individual questions, the ÖSYM evaluates the performance of the entire nation on a specific test section (e.g., the 40-question Mathematics test).

To calculate your score, the system looks at two statistical pillars:

  1. The National Average (Mean): What was the average net score achieved by all students in Turkey on this specific test? (For TYT Math, the national average is historically very low, often around 5 or 6 net out of 40).
  2. The Standard Deviation: How spread out were the students' scores from that average? A high standard deviation means scores were all over the place (some very high, some very low). A low standard deviation means most students scored very close to the average.

Your "Net" score is fed into a statistical formula that compares it against the national average and divides it by the standard deviation. This process converts your raw net score into a Standard Score.

What does this mean in plain English? If a test is extremely difficult nationwide (low average), every correct answer you get in that test becomes slightly more valuable because you are pulling further ahead of the pack.

Test Coefficients: Do Math and Science Really Pay More?

Once your Standard Score is calculated, it is multiplied by the designated Coefficient (Katsayı) for that specific subject.

According to the official YKS guidelines, the overall weight of the TYT is distributed as follows:

  • Turkish: 33%
  • Basic Mathematics: 33%
  • Social Sciences: 17%
  • Science: 17%

However, when you break this down by the number of questions (40 Turkish/Math vs. 20 Social/Science), the per-question coefficient is nearly identical across the board.
The standard baseline coefficients are approximately:

  • ~3.3 points per Turkish Net
  • ~3.3 points per Math Net
  • ~3.4 points per Social Science Net
  • ~3.4 points per Science Net

The Truth About the Point Difference

As you can see, the base difference between a Math net and a Science net is mathematically minuscule—only about 0.1 points.

Even if the Math test is historically brutal one year, dropping the national average and triggering a standard deviation shift, the math coefficient might rise from 3.3 to perhaps 3.45. It does not double or triple in value. A Turkish net and a Math net will almost always yield roughly the same amount of raw points.

So Why Do People Care About Standard Deviation?

If the point difference is so small, why is standard deviation considered so important? Because of the rankings.

In the middle-tier of the TYT (around the 250-320 point mark), student scores are incredibly congested. Tens of thousands of students might be separated by only 2 or 3 total points. In this densely packed zone, gaining an extra 0.15 points because you solved a math question during a "hard math year" might not sound like a lot of points, but it is enough to push your national ranking ahead by 10,000 to 20,000 people.

Standard deviation doesn't give you a massive point boost; it gives you a massive ranking boost by breaking the ties in congested score brackets.
