The Advanced "Sweat Rate" Calculation for Serious Athletes

For competitive athletes, marathon runners, or those engaging in prolonged intense exercise (lasting more than 90 minutes), the general 500 ml addition might not be enough. Sports scientists recommend calculating your specific "Sweat Rate."

Here is how you do it:

  1. Weigh yourself (without clothes) immediately before your workout. Let's say you weigh 70.0 kg (154.3 lbs).
  2. Exercise for exactly one hour. Do not drink any fluids or use the restroom during this hour to keep the calculation simple.
  3. Weigh yourself again (without clothes) immediately after the workout, having toweled off any sweat. Let's say you now weigh 69.2 kg (152.5 lbs).
  4. Calculate the difference: 70.0 kg - 69.2 kg = 0.8 kg (or 1.8 lbs) lost.

Since 1 kg of weight loss roughly equals 1 liter of fluid loss, your personal sweat rate is 800 ml (approx. 27 fl oz) per hour of exercise. Therefore, for every hour you train at that intensity, you need to drink exactly 800 ml of fluid to maintain perfect hydration.

The Strategy: When to Drink Around Your Workout

Chugging a massive bottle of water right before stepping onto the treadmill is a recipe for nausea and a heavy stomach. Proper sports hydration is strategic and spread out over time.

1. Pre-Workout Hydration (Priming the Engine)

You should never start a workout in a dehydrated state.
